Back in 1940s or earlier, the Territory of Hawaii set aside a little over half an acre for a small school to support the area. In 1955, the territory determined that there would be few children for a school and they auctioned the school lot to the highest bidders, Lois and Ernest, parents of the present owner. The territory required them to improve the lot within a year. Hence the cottage in 1956 by the renowned Hawaii architect, Val Ossipoff. It has served as a guest house and vacation rental ever since. The lanai was surrounded by a low bench railing. You could sit on the bench and enjoy the view. During those first years, water puddled on the t and g flooring at the end facing down the road. It eventually rotted. The solution was to fill in the end of the lanai facing hana. Then our fear of someone suing us for falling off the friendly bench took over and we installed the screen that exists today. Much of the art is from the owner's collection and includes several paintings by his grandmother. The mountain scene above the bed is of Mt. Olomana, on O'ahu where the owner once lived.
